UK: Geophysical survey to develope a new 2 GW interconnector

A geophysical survey is now in progress at a recently projected HVDC interconnector in the UK, which will boost the electrical network between Suffolk and Kent, aiding in meeting the UK's 2050 net-zero objective. The 2 GW Sea Link, designed by National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), will be around 145 km long and primarily offshore. This initiative is a component of the UK Great Grid Upgrade.

Next Geosolutions conducts geophysical surveys utilising the survey boats Shore Presence and Shore Possibility. Surveys are anticipated to be finished by the middle of February 2024. Geophysical surveys remain underway in five distinct territories of offshore and coastal seas between Aldeburgh, Suffolk, and Pegwell Bay, Ramsgate, Kent. The anticipated Sea Link includes altering parts of existing overhead wires in Suffolk and Kent, shifting third-party assets, and draining land from the construction and operational dimensions.

NGET's project to strengthen the energy network between Suffolk and Kent is divided into three distinct sections. In addition to NGET's Sea Link concepts, two additional electricity link projects in Suffolk are being proposed by National Grid Ventures (NGV): LionLink and Nautilus. The National Grid announced that it just wrapped up its statutory consultation, which was held between October and December 2023, and is now examining all submitted input. NGET will be submitting a proposal to the Planning Inspectorate in the third quarter of this year, adhering to that they will have 28 days to analyse the proposal and decide whether or not to accept it for inspection. Construction is projected to start in 2026 and finish around 2030, so the link is in place and linked to the rest of the network by the end of 2030.
