OX2 and Ingka submitted an authorization application for a 3.1GW Neptunus offshore wind hub in Sweden

OX2 and Ingka Investments, IKEA's largest retailer, have applied for permission under Sweden's Exclusive Economic Zone Act proposing the development of the 3.1 GW offshore energy hub Neptunus off the coast of Blekinge in southern Sweden. The Neptunus energy hub is anticipated to consist of up to 207 wind turbines with a maximum height of 420 meters and is expected to be located around 50 kilometers from the Swedish coast. The annual output is projected to be between 13 and 15 TWh, equivalent to the region of Blekinge and Skåne's current total energy consumption.

By 2022, Sweden had 193 MW of installed offshore wind capacity and more than 14 GW of onshore wind. Sweden has almost 3 GW of wind power capacity undergoing development, with over 84 GW in development. This ambitious initiative intends to transform Sweden's renewable energy sector through the integration of offshore wind generation, hydrogen production, and a pilot project to oxygenate the Baltic Sea.

"The energy hub Neptunus is among the first of the new generation of wind farms. By creating renewable energy and hydrogen, Sweden will be able to ensure electricity for non-electrified areas. The oxygen produced by hydrogen may also be utilised to oxygenate the Baltic Sea's bottom water and boost biodiversity," said Emelie Zakrisson, head of offshore wind development in Sweden at OX2.

"The oxygen from the hydrogen production also has the potential to oxygenate the bottom water in the Baltic Sea to enhance biodiversity."

The Neptunus project is presently in its initial phases of development, featuring 1.9 GW included in OX2's project development portfolio. By the conclusion of the third quarter of 2023, the total was 34,074 MW. OX2 and Ingka Investments have been engaged in the development of six offshore wind farms in Sweden: 400 MW Galene on the west coast, the 1.4 GW Triton, Neptunus in the south of Sweden, the 5.5 GW Aurora between the islands of Öland and Gotland, Pleione, and Ran. The Swedish government granted final permissions for the development of these wind farms.

Swedish government intends to attain a truly "fossil-free" electrical grid by 2040 (the original reference (2016) of a "100% renewable electricity system" was amended by "fossil-free" that incorporates nuclear in 2023).
