Italy is taking steps to accelerate domestic oil and gas production as the government looks to strengthen energy security and reduce its dependence on imports. The measures focus on cutting delays in drilling permits, including the appointment of special commissioners when local authorities fail to make decisions within required timeframes.
Italy currently produces around 29 million barrels of crude oil and 3 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, but this covers only a small share of its overall energy requirements. Natural gas is particularly important to Italy, accounting for almost half of its electricity generation, the highest proportion among EU countries.
The push comes amid higher energy costs and geopolitical supply disruptions, including disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Italy's energy import bill is expected to approach €60 billion in 2026, increasing the pressure to develop domestic resources. Major companies operating in the country's hydrocarbon sector include Eni, Shell and TotalEnergies.
Relevance to SA
This is highly relevant to SA, particularly because faster permitting could translate into more activity across Italy's oil & gas project lifecycle.

Looking Ahead
Italy's decision to accelerate oil and gas permitting could create additional demand for the engineering expertise, specialist personnel, drilling support, marine operations and technical capabilities needed to turn approved projects into operational assets.
For SA's content strategy, this would make a strong thought-leadership angle: Europe's energy transition is continuing, but energy security is reshaping where and how conventional energy projects are being developed.
