The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland released tenders for offers for a floating LiDAR and data service for the Atlantic Marine Energy Test Site (AMETS). The contract, valued at €2.5 million, entails the installation, operation, maintenance, data collection, and overall decommissioning of the LiDAR system, as well as the transmission of essential information to SEAI.
SEAI initiated offshore surveys at AMETS at the start of last year, as well as worked on drafting a tender for an onshore substation to link AMETS to the grid. Around the same time, SEAI disclosed that plans were being made for a tender to purchase a floating LiDAR.
The cutting-edge system will deliver essential weather and site condition data to technology architects, supporting the optimisation of wind energy converters that drive the growth of offshore wind energy in Ireland. The result would enable SEAI to more accurately capture meteorological and metocean data.
METS, based west of Belmullet in County Mayo, is a floating wind and wave energy technology testing facility. It is being developed as an integral part of Ireland's Ocean Energy Strategy. , serves as a floating wind and wave energy technology test facility. The facility will feature two unique test locations with varying water depths, allowing a variety of technologies to be evaluated.
After obtaining a foreshore license, SEAI started to focus on expanding the site's scope to incorporate floating wind technologies. By tapping the power of offshore wind, Ireland is not only inching closer to its environmental objectives as well as setting a benchmark for various nations across the globe.
