€5 billion contract to Prysmian in Germany

€5 billion contract to Prysmian in Germany

Prysmian has secured a €5 billion ($5.4 billion) agreement, the "largest ever" for the Italian cable manufacturer, to aid in supplying offshore wind power to Germany. Prysmian has signed three contracts with Amprion, the transmission system operator (TSO), for the BalWin1 and BalWin2 offshore grid connection systems, as well as the DC34 underground cable project in Germany.

According to Prysmian, this package agreement is the largest in terms of value and cable kilometres ever given to the business, and it will enable it to transmit energy generated in the North Sea to Germany's west and south. The three projects are part of Germany's bigger ambition to develop 70 GW of offshore wind by 2045, which are intended to transmit electricity generated

"The three contracts with Amprion represent a significant milestone for Prysmian, demonstrating once again the two businesses' trustworthy collaboration. We are pleased to actively participate as a dependable partner in the energy transformation," said Hakan Ozmen, EVP Prysmian Transmission Division.

"We gained the necessary cable resources for three major energy transformation projects. Contracts like the one with Prysmian are critical to meeting our offshore expansion ambitions. For us, this is a significant step towards project success," stated Dr. Hendrik Neumann, Amprion's CTO.

Prysmian was picked as the preferred bidder in August of last year. The contract includes about 4,400 kilometres of ±525 kV HVDC cables and dedicated metallic return (DMR) cables, with roughly 3,400 kilometres on land and 1,000 km undersea.

BalWin1 and BalWin2 will transmit as much as two GW of energy from planned offshore wind farms in the German North Sea BalWin cluster to grid link points in Wehrendorf (Lower Saxony) and Westerkappeln (North Rhine-Westphalia). DC34, a segment of the Rhein-Main-Link, will link the Lower Saxony substation to a second substation in the Hesse, allowing up to 2 GW of wind energy to be transmitted to end-users in the Rhine-Main metropolitan region.
