Saipem’s subsea drone Hydrone-R achieves milestone with six-month-long inspection program

A major milestone has been achieved by the global leader in the engineering and construction of major projects for the energy and infrastructure sectors Saipem's underwater intervention drone, Hydrone-R, which is enhancing operations in the offshore energy sector. It has accomplished its goal of 167 days of continuous subsea stay while performing remotely operated works at the Norwegian Sea's Njord Field development, managed by Equinor in the Norwegian Sea.

Through a communication link, activities are fully supervised by Saipem's onshore control centre located in Stavanger. The Hydrone-R may be controlled by the company's drone pilots, or they can upload customised tasks for the vehicle to carry out on its own.

Saipem's Hydrone Programme includes the Hydrone-R, a fleet of innovative drones and cutting-edge supporting equipment.

To improve the general integrity and safety of Equinor's subsea systems, the drone is meant to carry out inspections and interventions on subsea assets, delivering information about potential risks. According to the Saipem, drone operators have the alternative of controlling the Hydrone-R with their commands or programming missions for the vehicle to perform autonomous activities.

The anticipated launch of Hydrone-W, an entirely electric heavy-duty subsea drone, will take subsea robotics electrification to a new level and serve as another instance of Saipem's dedication to innovation and constant development.
