InterConnect Malta, a state-owned entity, has launched three new tenders for the second electrical interconnector between Malta and Italy, following the project's final approval less than a month ago.
One of the tenders invites applicants for owner’s engineer activities covering the entire project. The other two focus on the supply and installation of a 132 kV variable shunt reactor at the Maghtab terminal station and insurance advisory services for the interconnector and utility-scale battery energy storage facilities.
The IC2 interconnector will feature a ~122-kilometer-long, 225 MW HVAC electrical cable connecting the Terna substation in Ragusa, Sicily, to the Enemalta terminal station in Maghtab, running parallel to the existing HVAC cable link commissioned in 2015. The overall cable system includes a 21-kilometer land cable in Sicily, a 99-kilometer submarine cable, and a 2-kilometer land cable in Malta.
These tenders are part of ongoing procurement efforts, complementing previous tenders for land cable procurement and installation in Malta and Italy, the subsea cable’s manufacture and laying, 220 kV shunt reactors, transformers, HV switchgear, control systems, civil works, fire protection in Italy, and the installation of walk-through culverts in Malta.
The second Malta-Sicily interconnector aligns with the Maltese Government’s energy strategy to meet 2030 climate and energy targets and support long-term decarbonization goals. It recently secured final approval from the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security (MASE), with commissioning set for 2026.
