Jan De Nul Achieves Thor Offshore Wind Cable Pull-In, Boosting Denmark’s Clean Energy

Jan De Nul’s Thor Offshore Wind Cable Pull-In connects offshore turbines to Denmark’s grid, helping power homes with renewable energy.

Jan De Nul Completes Thor Offshore Wind Cable Pull-In: Powering Denmark’s Energy Future

Jan De Nul has marked a significant milestone in Denmark’s energy transition with the successful pull-in of two export cables for the 1,080 MW Thor offshore wind farm. According to Jan De Nul, these cables will transport renewable electricity from the wind farm, located 22 kilometers off the Danish coast in the North Sea, directly to the mainland. This achievement is not just a technical success—it represents an important step toward delivering clean energy at scale in Europe.

Together with Hellenic Cables, Jan De Nul secured the contract in 2023 to provide the entire cable package for the Thor project. This includes around 60 kilometers of export cables along the 30-kilometer route from offshore site to shore, as well as approximately 200 kilometers of inter-array cables that will connect the 72 wind turbines within the farm. Such large-scale subsea infrastructure demands precise planning, robust marine operations, and highly skilled offshore teams—areas where the offshore workforce plays a vital role in ensuring project success.

According to Denmark’s transmission system operator, Energinet, work connecting Thor to the national grid has also been completed, paving the way for the next phase. Installation of the Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD turbines is scheduled to begin in 2026, with full operation expected by 2027. Once operational, Thor will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, contributing significantly to the country’s decarbonisation targets and bolstering Europe’s renewable energy capacity.

The Thor project highlights both the opportunities and challenges facing offshore wind development today. Delivering a project of this scale requires seamless coordination across engineering, logistics, and compliance, not to mention access to experienced personnel for subsea operations, survey, trenching, and cable-lay activities. As demand grows for clean energy, projects like Thor underscore the critical need for specialized offshore professionals who can help bring these complex undertakings to life.

In addition to technical achievements, construction of Thor’s operations and maintenance base is nearing completion. Led by RWE in partnership with Norges Bank Investment Management, this facility will support the long-term reliability and performance of the wind farm. It’s a reminder that offshore wind success depends not only on installation but also on strong, sustained operational support from a skilled workforce.

For offshore professionals, the Thor project offers valuable insights into the future of subsea energy infrastructure. It reflects the growing complexity of offshore wind and the essential role of dedicated teams working together to achieve shared sustainability goals. SA Operations remains focused on helping our clients meet these challenges by delivering top-tier talent, expert logistics, and reliable payroll solutions for projects like Thor.
