NKT completes the first 255 km cable installation for Yggdrasil, bringing low-emission shore power to Norway’s major offshore oil and gas project.

NKT Completes First Cable Installation for Yggdrasil: A Milestone in Low-Emission Offshore Power

A significant step forward for low-emission offshore operations has been achieved as NKT, the Denmark-based power cable manufacturer and installer, completes the first installation campaign for connecting Norway’s Yggdrasil oil and gas development to shore power. According to NKT, this marks the beginning of a project that aims to deliver a stable and low-emission power supply to one of the most substantial oil and gas projects currently underway in the North Sea.

The installation involves 255 kilometers of high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cables laid by NKT Victoria, the company’s biofuel-certified cable laying vessel. This first phase of work has been completed across the Norwegian fjords and out into the North Sea, setting the foundation for a power-from-shore connection that will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the Yggdrasil area. The use of biofuel on NKT Victoria also demonstrates how suppliers are aligning with the industry’s push for decarbonisation and more sustainable offshore operations.

Yggdrasil, led by operator Aker BP alongside partners Equinor and Orlen Upstream Norway, is a $10.3 billion investment with gross resources exceeding 700 million barrels of oil equivalent. Positioned between Alvheim and Oseberg, this development includes the Hugin, Fulla, and Munin license groups. According to Aker BP, Yggdrasil’s infrastructure will encompass three platforms, nine subsea templates, new oil and gas export pipelines, and a shore power link, all of which will be remotely controlled from Stavanger.

This fully integrated onshore operations model reflects a growing trend across offshore energy: the increasing use of automation, digitalisation, and reduced offshore manning. For professionals across subsea operations, cable installation, and remote systems, these advancements create new opportunities and demand for specialised skills. SA Operations recognises this shift and continues to focus on sourcing top-tier talent in areas such as subsea power, high-voltage systems, cable trenching, and survey operations to support projects like Yggdrasil.

The collaboration between NKT and Equinor on the cable’s design, production, and installation highlights the level of teamwork required for modern offshore developments. For those involved in offshore telecommunications and power-from-shore initiatives, Yggdrasil serves as a case study of how the industry is combining innovation and sustainability to secure Europe’s energy future.

As offshore energy evolves, this project reinforces how critical it is to have the right talent and expertise onboard. SA Operations is closely tracking these developments to ensure clients are supported with the skilled professionals needed to deliver such complex projects.
