Fram Sør subsea development: $2B investment for sustainable oil & gas
Fram Sør subsea development delivers low-emission oil and gas from Norway’s North Sea, supporting Europe’s energy security through innovation and efficiency.
Fram Sør subsea development brings fresh energy security to Europe
A major project in the North Sea is set to unlock new oil and gas reserves while supporting Europe’s energy security. Equinor and its partners Vår Energi and Inpex Idemitsu Norge have announced a significant $2 billion investment in the Fram Sør subsea development. According to Equinor, this project combines multiple discoveries in the northern part of the North Sea and will tie into existing infrastructure, enabling the export of vital resources via the Troll C platform off Norway’s coast.
What makes Fram Sør particularly noteworthy for offshore professionals is its combination of innovation and efficiency. The development is expected to produce 116 million barrels of oil equivalent, predominantly oil, with first production planned by the end of 2029. As highlighted by Geir Tungesvik of Equinor, Fram Sør will “contribute to security of energy supply from the Norwegian Continental Shelf to Europe.” This aligns with the growing focus on leveraging mature basins while maintaining strong profitability and low environmental impact.
The project is also making headlines for its low carbon footprint. Fram Sør’s CO2 intensity is estimated at 0.5 kg per barrel of oil equivalent, which, according to Equinor, is significantly below the industry average of 16 kg per barrel (IOGP 2023). This low-emission profile is partly thanks to Troll C platform’s shore power, supporting Europe’s decarbonisation goals while keeping essential hydrocarbons flowing.
From a recruitment and supply chain perspective, Fram Sør offers substantial opportunities. The project is expected to generate around 4,500 full-time equivalent jobs during development, based on a study by Kunnskapsparken in Bodø. While most contracts will benefit Norwegian suppliers, international construction contributions will also play a role. Companies like OneSubsea, Subsea7, TechnipFMC, and Aker Solutions are already involved following completion of the front-end engineering and design phase. Additional contracts for pipes, cables and installation work are planned for award this year.
Another technical highlight of Fram Sør is its pioneering use of all-electric subsea Christmas trees. According to Equinor, this eliminates hydraulic fluid requirements and enhances environmental protection while improving subsea equipment monitoring. It’s a first for the Norwegian Continental Shelf and reflects a broader industry shift toward cleaner and more efficient offshore technologies.
Situated about 120 kilometers northwest of Bergen in 350 meters of water, Fram Sør’s subsea templates will tie into the Troll C platform. Oil will reach Mongstad via Troll Oil Pipeline II, while gas will head to Kollsnes through Troll A. With 12 wells planned initially and space for additional development, Fram Sør represents both immediate and future potential for the region’s energy mix.
For offshore professionals, this development illustrates the balance between sustainable operations, technological advancement and resource security. As the project progresses, it will undoubtedly create demand for specialized skills in subsea engineering, installation, inspection and operations. This underlines the continued importance of experienced offshore talent—an area where SA Operations remains a dedicated partner to clients worldwide.
