The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) has awarded Saipem, a global provider of engineering services, the 2024 Spotlight on New Technology® Award for their Integrated Acoustic Unit (I.A.U.) technology, which allows for digital subsea pipeline monitoring during laying operations. With this technology, subsea pipeline laying activities may be digitally monitored without causing any disruption.
Saipem's I.A.U. is a cutting-edge digital device that enables real-time monitoring of the integrity of offshore pipelines during laying activities. It is based on acoustic technology, making it non-intrusive.
The unit is now assisting ongoing projects after receiving the Statement of Technology Qualification from the esteemed certifying authority DNV and undergoing thorough testing on Saipem's vessels.
The new technology avoids the hazards associated with the mechanical detectors frequently employed during pipelaying and offers more precision and speed in remotely detecting blockages, pipe deformations, inadvertent water intrusion, and other impediments. In addition to storing all measurements, I.A.U. may interchange them with the pipelay vessel's data collection system, helping to digitise data related to offshore laying activities.
Before this, Saipem had won the Spotlight on New Technology® award for three other in-house inventions: the FlatFish drone, which is an advanced underwater inspection drone; the Hydrone-R drone, which is an underwater intervention drone; and OIE (Offset Installation Equipment), which is the only technology in the world that can remotely cap oil well spills caused by blowouts or incidents, in 2019.
