NKT, headquartered in Denmark, has entered into a four-year service arrangement with Norway's Pipeline Repair and Subsea Intervention (PRSI) Pool to manage the maintenance and repair of 6,000 km of offshore power cables, bringing together their capabilities for a more sustainable future.
The PRSI Pool comprises 23 companies that manage their offshore pipeline and power cable repair contingency through the pool. With a roster of 23 member companies, including Equinor, Aker BP, and Shell, the PRSI Pool illustrates the collective effort to strengthen energy security and sustainability.
The agreement primarily focuses on the North Sea and encompasses a broad spectrum of cables, including DC XLPE cables, mass-impregnated cables, oil-filled cables, and AC cables. NKT could use its cable-laying vessel (CLV) NKT Victoria, certified to run on biofuel, or its cable handling system. The deal includes the potential for two two-year extensions.
"We have a prolonged and reliable connection with Equinor, the administrator of the PRSI Pool, and we are glad to have been chosen again as the service provider for a wide range of cable types. "This demonstrates our extensive experience in maintenance and repair," stated Johan Thörnqvist, NKT's Head of Offshore Sales and Service in Sweden.
The alliance between NKT and the PRSI Pool arrives at an important time as the reliance on offshore energy resources grows. With the North Sea as a key hub for wind energy generation, maintaining the underlying infrastructure, notably power cables, is essential.
Also, NKT Cables Group has dedicated itself to lowering absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 90% by FY2030 compared to the FY2019 base year.
