Syria and Cyprus have signed an agreement to establish the new “Ebla” submarine cable, moving the project into its implementation phase. The cable will connect Tartous, Syria, with the TATCYNOS submarine cable station in Cyprus, strengthening Syria’s international digital connectivity.
The Ebla cable is part of a broader plan to modernize Syria's communications infrastructure. The country is also planning a Syrian landing station for the Medusa submarine cable and developing an open-access national fibre-optic network through SilkLink.
Together, these projects are intended to distribute international capacity to cities, data centres, operators and border crossings, while supporting connectivity between Europe, neighbouring countries, the Gulf and Asia.
Relevance to SA
This is particularly relevant to SA because the project involves several areas within SA's subsea, survey, engineering and marine capabilities.
