Saipem Drillship and Eni Resume Offshore Drilling in Egypt

Italy’s energy major, Eni, is gearing up to restart drilling operations at Egypt’s Zohr field after welcoming the Saipem 10,000 drillship from the fleet of Saipem, a leading Italian engineering and drilling services provider.

According to Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, the Saipem 10,000 arrived in Egyptian waters on January 28, 2025, to drill two deepwater wells in the Zohr field, located 200 kilometers north of Port Said in the Shorouk area. This follows the announcement by Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, confirming the resumption of Zohr’s development activities, with the goal of producing 220 million cubic feet of gas per day.

Discovered in 2015 and brought on stream in 2017, the Zohr field is classified by Eni as a supergiant, holding 480 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe). It is considered the largest natural gas discovery in the Mediterranean, reaching a production level of 2.7 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) in 2019, with an initial target of 3.2 bcfd.

Beyond Egypt, Eni has been expanding its footprint in Côte d'Ivoire. In December 2024, the company commenced production from Baleine Phase 2, marking the second phase of development in one of the country’s largest-ever oil and gas discoveries.
