NeuConnect project update!

NeuConnect project update!

Siemens Energy and Jones Bros Civil Engineering are close to the execution of the key works for NeuConnect's UK converter station, the first energy link between the UK and Germany. The works comprised the construction of a 50,000m2 platform for the new converter station, as well as two attenuation ponds to facilitate drainage.

NeuConnect project, one of the world's largest interconnectors, with approximately 725 km of land and undersea cables an 'invisible energy highway' between the UK and Germany will deliver up to 1.4GW of electrical energy that may flow in each way.

With necessary works approaching completion, construction of the UK converter station will begin in the following months.

"There is no time to waste in the drive to net zero, thus NeuConnect is not only an important energy project for Europe, but it is also being completed quickly. In the six years since we founded NeuConnect Britain Ltd, we have transformed a 'line on a map' into a fully funded scheme, with construction well underway and the first UK-German energy link beginning to take shape", said Julia Prescot, Chair of the NeuConnect Board and Partner at lead investor Meridiam.

NeuConnect links the Fedderwarden substation in Wilhelmshaven to the Isle of Grain substation in Kent, near London. It can transmit up to 1.4 GW of electrical power via two HVDC cables, one as a marine pipeline in the North Marine and the other as an underground pipeline on German land.

Headed by global investors Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, Kansai Electric Power, and TEPCO, NeuConnect will become one of the world's largest interconnectors with around 725 km of land and undersea cables.

NeuConnect is projected to be operational by 2028, enhancing energy security and resilience while also facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources in both nations. The announcement comes as this week commemorates the sixth anniversary of NeuConnect Britain Ltd, which was formed to create a new energy link between the UK and Germany. In Germany, essential activities at the Wilhelmshaven site are also progressing well, with substantial construction set to begin later this year.
