Italy has granted permission for an extremely important underwater cable project in the Adriatic Sea, which aims to link the Marche and Abruzzo regions. The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security approved transmission system operator Terna's Adriatic Link undersea power line. The initiative is a component of the National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate (PNIEC) and particularly contributes to the strategic development of Italy's energy infrastructure.
Terna expects to invest €1.3 billion in the development with 1GW of exchange capacity which will stretch for 250 kilometres (155 miles), comprising 210 underwater, to enhance trade capacity between northern and southern Italy. Transition stations will be developed near existing electricity substations at Cepagatti, Abruzzo, and Fano in the Le Marche area.
The minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said: "With the ministerial authorization of the Adriatic Link, another piece is placed in the path undertaken by the State with Terna to achieve the European decarbonisation goals of the Italian energy system in line with the objectives outlined in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan."
"We are very delighted with the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security's clearance for the Adriatic Link, one of Terna's key projects in the Ten-Year Development Plan. The infrastructure, for which we will invest approximately € 1.3 billion, will improve the security and resilience of the national power grid and contribute to meeting the goals set by the National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate, confirming Italy's role as a European and Mediterranean energy hub", said Giuseppina Di Foggia, Terna's CEO and General Manager.
The project cables will be positioned at a maximum depth of 100 metres, including two 40-kilometer subterranean cables. The project is expected to integrate and circulate renewable energy from wind and photovoltaic facilities in the south to consumption sites in the north. Prysmian will deliver a high-voltage direct current bipolar cable line that will be concluded by the first half of 2028.
