Ignitis Renewable and Ocean Winds picked Wood Thilsted for ground modelling and foundation concept design services for Lithuania's maiden OWF

Ignitis Renewables, a regional developer in Lithuania, and Ocean Winds have picked Wood Thilsted for ground modelling and foundation concept design services for Lithuania's maiden offshore wind farm. The project is scheduled to take place in 2024 and includes the development of a site ground model, assistance for the geotechnical initiative, and a range of foundation concept evaluation tasks.

The proposed location is around 30-36 kilometres off Lithuania's Baltic Sea shore and goes back to an area of surrounding 120 square kilometres. This offshore wind farm, which has a capacity of 700 MW and is expected to generate up to 3 TWh of electricity per year, will be operational by 2030. It might supply up to a fourth of Lithuania's current electricity consumption.

Wood Thilsted continues to grow its project capabilities in the Baltic Sea. Recognising the Baltic Sea's Potential towards Offshore Wind Production, WT's engineering squads have come up with a set of internal skills that are perfectly suited to the conceptual and design challenges of this region.

Vanrisch McLean, Geophysics and Survey Director at Wood Thilsted stated, "We are thrilled to begin work on this project, the first of its sort in the Baltic states. Our team maximises the utility of obtained site survey data by combining our deep geophysical and geotechnical expertise with our considerable foundation design experience. We are proud to support Ignitis Renewables in bringing offshore wind to Lithuania."

The Lithuanian authorities arranged the country's inaugural bidding for an offshore wind project last year and after a few months, it formally certified the joint venture between Ignitis Renewables and Ocean Winds as the developer of Lithuania's first offshore wind farm. Wood Thilsted was already involved in the project, assisting with the desk research phase before the auction.

This might be a historic milestone in Lithuania's green transition, anticipating Lithuania for an environmentally friendly future!
