BOURBON, a world leader in offshore marine services that provides a wide variety of surface and subsea marine services for oil and gas fields and wind farms, established a floating electrical hub (FEH) at the EolMed prototype floating wind farm site off Port-la-Nouvelle (southern France) in Autumn 2023. Bourbon transported and constructed the floating substation in two months using its anchor-handling tug supply vessel (AHTS), Bourbon Liberty 222, and included a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). On one side, the FEH will link to the project's three floating wind turbines, and On the contrary, the electricity generated by the 30 MW floating wind farm will be delivered to the power grid. This project will feature three wind turbines that will generate more than 110 million KwH per year by 2025, enough to power 50,000 households.
Stephan Midenet, CEO of Bourbon Subsea Services, stated, "Contributing to the success of the Eolmed project is a one-time opportunity for BOURBON, a leader in the installation of floating wind farms, to reaffirm its commitment to participating in the growth of the renewable energy industry." The project also highlights our capacity to deliver comprehensive services to our energy clients, leveraging all of the group's talents and assets in EPCI mode, from engineering to offshore installation. We are presently planning for the second part of this project, in which BOURBON will build and link the field's three wind turbines to the electrical grid in 2025."
The Eolmed project, directed by renewable energy provider QAIR, serves as one of the Mediterranean's first floating wind farms. Its objectives are to evaluate the technical dependability and commercial model of such an installation while also contributing to the development of an offshore wind energy sector in the Occitanie and PACA areas (South of France). BOURBON has begun work on the EolMed project under an EPCI contract signed in 2022, which entails the floating electrical hub, inter-array cables, and anchoring and mooring systems for the floating wind farm.
Qair, TotalEnergies, and BW Ideol have collaborated to develop the EolMed pilot project. The EolMed concept initiative will include three Vestas V164-10.0 MW wind turbines set on BW Ideol's Damping Pool floating foundations and installed 15 km off Gruissan at water depths of roughly 60 meters.
