COWI, an engineering consulting group, has been awarded a contract by Thistle Wind Partners (TWP), a JV comprising DEME, Qair, and Aspiravi dedicated to Scottish offshore wind development, to carry out pre-front end engineering design (FEED) studies for Ayre and Bowdun offshore wind projects off Scotland.
The Ayre project, located east of Orkney, is a 1GW floating-foundation offshore wind farm, whereas Bowdun is a 1GW fixed wind project located off the coast of Aberdeenshire.
Both offshore wind farms are expected to begin construction in 2029 to produce more than 2GW of energy by 2032/2033. The two projects were awarded at the ScotWind leasing round of 2022.
The Denmark-headquartered company will provide an analysis of the foundation design of each offshore wind project. The Pre-FEED studies will involve electrical and civil design aspects. The research will examine the possibility of developing a strong electrical infrastructure with inter-array cables linking to offshore substations, which will improve power distribution efficiency for each project.
COWI will additionally employ its expertise in road and railway design to help make judgments on onshore wire routing and related crossings.
Group chief executive Jens Højgaard Christoffersen stated that "collaborating with customers to achieve a more sustainable future yields positive results. Especially in our key markets and strategic priority areas like sustainable energy, climate adaption and water, large buildings, and infrastructure."
Damian McGirr, senior market director for COWI UK, wrote: "As an enterprise, we are dedicated to advancing the path to net zero and we are excited to be collaborating with Thistle Wind on these projects which will ensure that the economic opportunity of the global energy transition is captured here in Scotland."
TWP is assisting Scotland and the UK in producing exportable products and services for the global offshore wind sector by setting local supply chain objectives for these projects.
