Seven European partners, involving the Dutch Marine Energy Centre (DMEC, The Netherlands), EOMAP (Germany), Fórum Oceano (Portugal), INESC TEC (Portugal), Inyanga Marine Energy Group (France/UK), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), and Wave for Energy (Italy), have come together as a consortium to develop a satellite-based decision support tool to accelerate offshore renewable energy implementation.
The EU Agency for the Space Programme has funded the first blue energy Horizon Europe project, which intends to assist in accelerating the European Union's energy transition.
The alliance will develop a satellite-based decision-support tool that could assist the European Commission in accomplishing its targets of 300 GW of offshore wind and 40 GW of ocean energy throughout all of the European Union's aquatic basins by 2050.
"DMEC is pleased to announce the Blue-X tool, which is intended to expedite the implementation of renewable energy technologies. By piloting the Blue-X tool with technology providers in its network, DMEC hopes to use it to facilitate every stage of the process, from initial site planning to eventual decommissioning, fostering the widespread deployment of renewable energy solutions," says Koen Donkers, Business & Innovation Advisor at DMEC.
According to EOMAP, reaching these aims will require substantial and time-consuming MetOcean, geophysical, and environmental campaigns. BLUE-X is intended to provide important information for all five stages of the blue energy lifecycle: site assessment, planning, building, operations, and decommissioning.
"Increasing the proportion of blue energy is an essential aspect of achieving the Green Deal's objectives. "Increasing the use of Copernicus satellite data can help with rapid and fact-based decision-making," stated Fiammetta Diani, Head of Market Downstream and Innovation at EUSPA.
Inyanga MD Richard Parkinson added: "We will contribute our unique knowledge in tidal energy to the development of BLUE-X. Europe has access to some of the world's greatest tidal resources, which are now underutilised. By giving important decision-making information to developers, BLUE-X will assist in speeding the commercialization of tidal energy and realise its full potential."
"Our objective is to provide useful decision-making help to offshore renewable energy projects. "We want a tool that is simple to use and provides quick access to key data on the affected coastal areas," said Kim Knauer of EOMAP, which leads the BLUE-X collaboration.
More than 75 percent of the European Union's greenhouse gas emissions are accounted for by the energy sector. The amended 'Renewable Energy Directive' of 2023 raises the obligatory objective of doubling the contribution of renewables in the EU by 2030.
