Vår Energi Secures Drilling Permit for North Sea Wildcat Well

Norwegian oil and gas company Vår Energi has been granted a drilling permit by the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD) for a new wildcat well in the North Sea. The well, designated 7/1-4 S, falls under production license 1090. Vår Energi holds a 50% operating stake, with partners Petoro and Aker BP each holding 20%, while Equinor owns the remaining 10%.

The well will be drilled in January 2025 using the COSLPioneer, a semi-submersible drilling rig owned by COSL Drilling Europe. Built in 2010, the rig is designed for operations in water depths of up to 750 meters. It maintains station-keeping through an eight-line mooring system or a dynamic positioning mode with six fixed-pitch, variable-speed thrusters (DP3).

The drilling permit (2019-L) has been issued under paragraph 13 of the Petroleum Resource Act. The license was awarded in the TFO2020 licensing round. The planned drilling location is at coordinates 57° 53' 15.94'' N and 2° 13' 54.73'' E.

Vår Energi has been the operator of the license since January 2022. The permit remains valid until the completion of the drilling activity. The total licensed area for this well within Block 7/1 is 538 km².
