Van Oord Begins Offshore Construction at Nordseecluster A Wind Project
Van Oord has started offshore construction for RWE’s 1.6 GW Nordseecluster A, a milestone in Germany’s renewable energy development. Discover how this aligns with global offshore recruitment and engineering trends.
Van Oord Begins Offshore Construction at Nordseecluster A Wind Project
At SA Operations, we continue to follow the progress of significant offshore developments that define the future of energy. One such milestone is Van Oord’s recent commencement of offshore construction at RWE’s 1.6 GW Nordseecluster wind project in the German North Sea—a project demonstrates the increasing demand for specialized offshore talent and integrated subsea capabilities.
According to Van Oord, the first phase of this large-scale development, called Nordseecluster A, has begun with the installation of scour protection. These essential works are being carried out by the Stornes, Van Oord’s flexible fall pipe vessel equipped with a dynamic positioning system and in-house ROV technology—tools that ensure precise placement even in deeper waters. The vessel’s specialized capabilities are a strong example of how advanced equipment, backed by skilled offshore crews, continues to raise the standard in subsea construction.
The scope of Nordseecluster A includes the installation of 45 monopile foundations, 44 of which will support the next-generation Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines, while one will host the project’s offshore substation. The monopiles, manufactured by Dajin Heavy Industries, have already been delivered to the Buss Terminal in the Netherlands, setting the stage for a swift transition into the subsequent construction phases.
Van Oord’s Boreas—a jack-up installation vessel with a lifting capacity of over 3,000 tonnes—will take over for the foundation installation later this year. As noted by RWE, this project marks Boreas’ debut operation, symbolizing technical advancement and the evolving nature of offshore energy construction vessels and their increasingly pivotal role in global wind infrastructure.
What stands out in the Nordseecluster is the tight alignment with the renewable sector’s aggressive expansion goals. Phase A's 660 MW capacity will be fully connected to the grid by 2027, while phase B will contribute an additional 900 MW by early 2029. These timeframes are ambitious but reflect the pace at which the offshore wind sector is moving, driven by climate targets, technological innovation, and reliable workforce mobilization.
For SA Operations, projects like Nordseecluster underline the critical importance of high-quality recruitment and mobilization services. From ROV pilots and subsea engineers to foundation specialists and marine logistics personnel, the success of projects like this relies heavily on crews that are technically skilled and deeply familiar with offshore safety standards, compliance, and remote operations.
As the offshore wind industry grows, so too does the demand for experienced professionals in subsea construction, heavy lifting, and survey operations. This is where SA Operations continues to provide value—supporting global leaders with selective recruitment, seamless international payroll, and full-service crew management to keep offshore projects running smoothly, on schedule, and in compliance.
The Nordseecluster development is a clear signal to the industry: offshore renewables are no longer just an alternative—they are the backbone of future energy strategies. As the industry evolves, so must the workforce behind it.
Please stay connected with SA Operations as we continue to monitor and support transformative offshore developments like this one.
