Port of Hamburg: New joint venture to enhance renewable energy application

Hamburg Port Authority, Germany's "Gateway to the World" and third-busiest port in Europe, and Hamburger Energiewerke (HEnW), have formed a joint venture to accelerate the Port of Hamburg's decarbonisation.

Renewable sources of energy which include photovoltaics and wind power will be further enhanced in the port region, as well as renewable energy solutions. This alliance symbolises a dedication to expanding green energy. The newly established company "Erneuerbare Hafenenergie Hamburg GmbH" will be administered as a joint venture, with the two enterprises complementing each other's skills and expertise.

"The HPA regards its sustainable initiatives as a significant opportunity for the future. As a result, we are devoted to forward-thinking and new technologies, as well as their implementation in the port, to reduce carbon emissions. "After heavily promoting shore-side power supply in recent years, we would like to play an active role in the expansion of renewable energy generation in the port area," said Friedrich Stuhrmann, Managing Director of the Hamburg Port Authority.

"With Hamburger Energiewerke, we have a powerful partner on our side. The energy shift necessitates significant investment, but it also presents several possibilities that we wish to seize wisely. Being near to customers reduces transmission channels and hence expenses."

HPA, in handling port area management and development, provides competence in power procurement, whereas HEnW brings experience in designing, building, and running renewable energy facilities, as well as energy sector expertise. As the initial phase, specific endeavours with a total capacity of around 70 megawatts will be examined as part of feasibility studies. Furthermore, additional possibilities for harbour extension are being investigated constantly.

The proposed ground-mounted PV and wind power facilities will mainly supply green harbour electricity to the HPA and local port firms. HEnW will be in charge of operating the plants, which will subsequently manage the renewable power generated and distribute it to electricity users. The company will be formed in the spring of this year, assuming the audit results are good and by state budget requirements.

"We have already installed six turbines in the port and hence have the necessary experience to produce and run renewable energy in this metropolitan location. Even though it will not be simple, we are delighted to be collaborating with the HPA to further the spread of ground-mounted PV systems and wind power in Hamburg."
