Curtiss-Wright Corporation, headquartered in North Carolina, recently executed a Technology Cooperation Agreement with Brazilian state-owned oil and gas company Petrobras to provide a seal-less canned motor boosting solution for its Campos Basin field to enable consistent subsea production.
Both companies have signed a technology cooperation agreement to develop, construct, evaluate, and provide operational support for a subsea canned motor boosting system that will be deployed mudline at a Petrobras-producing field in the Campos Basin of Brazil. Curtiss-Wright is collaborating with Petrobras to create a subsea boosting system for unprocessed hydrocarbon fluid composed of oil, gas, and particles that will operate at a water depth of 1,500 metres.
"We are delighted to be working together with a leading technology developer and experienced end-user of downhole pumping and mudline boosting systems for demanding applications," said Curtiss-Wright Corporation Chair and CEO Lynn M. Bamford. "These efforts will allow us to put our proven canned motor technology understanding to this adjacent market, thereby enabling an all-electric subsea production system, while providing an opportunity to bring immense value to Petrobras."
Curtiss-Wright's canned motor pump technology is anticipated to allow for reliable subsea production with fewer topside support systems, as well as the flexibility to deploy these systems on lighter-weight, lower-cost vessels that are more readily available than the larger handling vessels needed in today's operations. This “topside-less” technology will help Petrobras’ target of all-electric subsea boosting systems to enable extended tie-back production arrangements.
Furthermore, the design allows for the deployment of future Curtiss-Wright topside-less subsea boosting systems with a scalable capacity of 6MW for multiphase applications, in line with Petrobras' technological development plan.
Curtiss-Wright's Naval & Power Segment is responsible for design, manufacture, and water-based testing at its Cheswick, Pennsylvania site. Multiphase hydrocarbon testing will be done in a Brazilian facility. The first Subsea Canned Motor Boosting System is projected to be operational in 2027.
