North Sea innovations towards net zero: A way through technology

The North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) highlighted the North Sea's significant contribution in embracing new technologies that will promote energy security and decarbonisation, in addition to enabling the transition to low-carbon energy sources.

The British regulator's 2023 Technology Insights report disclosed that 1,200 cutting-edge innovations, including aerial drones and autonomous underwater vehicles, have been identified in their most recent poll, an increase from 1,080 in 2022 and 880 in 2021. Net zero and digital technologies are seeing increased innovation. While the former increased from 61 in 2021 to 130 in 2023, the latter increased from 190 to 381 in the same two-year span.

According to the NSTA, operators encourage net zero by paying attention to emission reduction and low-carbon technology. Examples include forward-looking IfraRed cameras for measuring methane emissions and flare gas recovery technologies to decrease hydrocarbon waste.

"The North Sea offers several prospects in hydrocarbons and net zero, but it may also be a challenging location to operate. Operators must concentrate on finding answers to several difficult challenges. "Their innovative approach is evident in the ongoing development and application of the new technologies highlighted in this report," stated Ernie Lamza, NSTA Technology Manager.

"World-leading technologies, skills and experience boost production and support the energy transition, placing UKCS workers and companies in a great position to secure work and deliver products and services in the UK and in other producing regions around the world."

The majority of the total expenditure was directed to well drilling, construction, and installation. Operators spent £200 million (roughly $250 million) purchasing technology from vendors and £60 million (about $75 million) on R&D.

Both statistics represent an increase from the previous year when £156 million (about $210 million) and £49 million (roughly $62 million) were invested. Carbon emissions are being reduced as low-carbon electricity and energy efficiency technologies are used more widely.
