Offshore Energy Under Threat: The Growing Security Risks of Drone Technology

As drone capabilities advance, so do risks to offshore infrastructure. Discover how hybrid warfare and non-state actors reshape offshore security in the energy sector. Stay ahead with expert insights tailored for offshore professionals.

Drones and the Rising Threat to Offshore Energy Infrastructure

At SA Operations, we recognize the evolving challenges faced by offshore professionals. One emerging concern that cannot be ignored is drone technology's growing threat to offshore energy installations. What was once seen purely as a tool for inspection and data collection is now being weaponized, creating profound implications for the safety and resilience of our industry.

According to Offshore Energies UK, experts from the security, intelligence, and academic sectors convened in Aberdeen this week with a pressing agenda: to confront the vulnerabilities facing offshore infrastructure around the UK, particularly in Scottish waters. Their findings were sobering. Drones are no longer just flying over installations for survey and maintenance work—they're being used for surveillance, reconnaissance, and potentially much worse.

Cliff Thoburn, Head of Intelligence at RMI Security Consultants, notes that adversaries are quietly adapting as the offshore industry becomes increasingly reliant on drone technology for legitimate operations. "Some employees don't see drones as anything unusual," he explained, "and adversaries have noticed that—getting drones closer to our platforms for reconnaissance activity." This familiarity, he warns, is being exploited.

The concern isn't limited to airborne threats. Unmanned surface and subsea vehicles are also part of this emerging threat landscape. From Russia's strategic hybrid warfare tactics to non-state actors like activist groups or mercenary proxies, many players can execute sabotage operations using remote-controlled technology. The intention? Disrupt critical infrastructure without triggering large-scale retaliation.

The infrastructure at risk is vast. With over 160 visible platforms in the North Sea alone, thousands of offshore wind turbines, high-voltage power grid connections, and critical subsea telecommunications cables, the stakes are higher than ever. These assets are essential, not only to energy production but also to the digital connectivity of entire nations. A single successful attack could have ripple effects far beyond the physical damage.

While Spain and Portugal recently recovered from what's suspected to be a cyber-attack that temporarily knocked out portions of their power grids, the event serves as a real-world reminder that infrastructure security is not just a local concern—it's a global priority.

At SA Operations, we understand the magnitude of protecting offshore installations and the professionals who operate them. As specialists in recruiting personnel for subsea operations, ROV activities, pipeline and cable trenching, and offshore wind foundation development, we are invested in the industry's future resilience.

The conversation around security can no longer be theoretical. It is now an essential layer of offshore planning, logistics, and daily operations. From certification and compliance checks to emergency response training and crew readiness, the offshore workforce must now consider drone threats as part of their operational environment.

Staying ahead means being informed, prepared, and proactive. This is about technology, people, systems, and integrated resilience. Offshore professionals, operators, and service providers must come together to build smarter defenses and adopt a mindset of continuous vigilance.
