A 1GW green hydrogen project in the Danish port city of Esbjerg was awarded ecological approval, pushing it towards a final investment decision (FID). Swiss developer of hydrogen ecosystems across Europe H2 Energy Europe has received environmental permission for its one GW green hydrogen generating project, along with a 400 kV beneath-the-surface cable to the Endrup transformer station.
The initiative coincides with Esbjerg's Vision 2025, which strives for the transformation of the municipality into a sustainable energy metropolis, solidifying Denmark's position as a pioneer in sustainable energy solutions. Throughout the construction interval, the facility is going to produce CO2-neutral excess heat, which can provide district heating to the majority of Esbjerg's residents. The mayor of Esbjerg municipality, Jesper Frost Rasmussen, stated that the environmental licence granted to the planned hydrogen plant by H2 Energy Europe is extremely significant for Esbjerg, placing it as a leading green business centre in Europe.
"H2 Energy Europe will play an important role in attracting new Power-to-X (PtX) companies to Esbjerg." However, there is still a need for clarification regarding the location of the hydrogen pipeline and its planned establishment, both of which are important to the development of a successful hydrogen sector in Denmark. We expect to reach an agreement on these issues very soon, further advancing the region's green energy goals," Rasmussen said.
This approval to H2 Energy Europe to develop a large-scale 1 GW electrolysis capacity green hydrogen production plant in Esbjerg, Denmark seems to represent a significant milestone, proceeding with the via road contributing to Europe's green transformation. The facility will influence the transmission of the green hydrogen produced by it to other nations in Europe. In addition, this resulted in about 60 permanent employees and up to 700 employees during the building phase.
Mark Pedersen, Operations Manager of H2 Energy Europe, said "Our first focus is the safety of our operations. Obtaining environmental permission for a project of this magnitude at this early stage of the year demonstrates our dedication to protecting our community's well-being. It also shows the Esbjerg municipality's supportive and forward-thinking orientation. We are appreciative of their collaboration and shared vision in making this project a reality.
Considering 5,000 production hours per year, H2 Energy anticipates producing around 90,000 tonnes of hydrogen as stated by H2 Energy Europe, proposed developments to aid in the decarbonisation of heavy industry and "H2 Energy Europe will play an important role in bringing more Power-to-X (PtX) companies to Esbjerg." However, there is still a need for clarification on the location of the hydrogen pipeline and its planned establishment, both of which are important to the development of a successful hydrogen sector in Denmark.
