China's Wenchang Oilfield Sets New Green Standards in Offshore Energy

At SA Operations, we're closely monitoring key developments in offshore energy—especially those that blend innovation with sustainability. A recent milestone from China's National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) is making waves for doing precisely that. The launch of the Wenchang 9-7 oilfield development marks not only another productive chapter in China's offshore expansion but also a clear shift toward greener hydrocarbon production practices—something offshore professionals around the globe should take note of.

Located in the western Pearl River Mouth Basin, this new offshore venture is set in depths averaging around 120 meters. It's a light, crude project with some serious ambition behind it. CNOOC, acting as the sole owner and operator, plans to commission 25 development wells, including 18 production wells and seven gas injection wells. According to CNOOC, the goal is to reach a steady production level of 12,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2027.

What's more compelling for industry observers—particularly those involved in offshore telecommunications and energy services—is how the project leverages adjacent infrastructure and emphasizes sustainable development. The platform integrates seamlessly with existing systems, showcasing a strategic approach to maximizing resources while minimizing environmental impact.

But the real game-changer is the application of miscible gas flooding technology. As China's first offshore low-permeability oilfield to implement this technique, CNOOC is tackling the long-standing issue of poor reservoir permeability head-on. This could open doors for similar offshore challenges globally, offering a valuable case study for engineers and operations specialists looking to enhance oil recovery while managing reservoir efficiency.

CNOOC has also built a robust gas network across the Wenchang oilfields, aligning with its green commitments. According to the company, interconnected pipelines help recover flare gas and waste heat, contributing to the project's impressive achievement of "zero flaring." Installing what CNOOC claims is the world's first 5MW offshore high-temperature flue gas Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power generation unit is one standout feature. This innovative system is expected to generate up to 40 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually while slashing CO₂ emissions by roughly 33,000 tons.

These are figures worth noting, especially for telecommunications and logistics teams operating in offshore zones. Reduced flaring, integrated heat recovery, and enhanced energy efficiency all point to a shift in offshore project management—one that aligns with global decarbonization goals while pushing the technical envelope.

This project also follows a string of CNOOC activities in the region, including the recent start-ups of the Caofeidian 6-4 oilfield comprehensive adjustment project and Wenchang 19-1 Phase II. The company also announced a significant discovery at the Weizhou 10-5 oil and gas field in the South China Sea, further emphasizing its aggressive strategy in offshore resource development.

For offshore operations professionals, especially those involved in ROV, subsea surveys, pipeline projects, or fabrication, the Wenchang development is more than just another oilfield—it's a sign of where the industry is heading. Smarter, greener, and more integrated systems are becoming the new standard, and as projects like this prove successful, client expectations will continue to shift.

According to CNOOC's statements, its focus on low-carbon innovation doesn't mean slowing down production but optimizing it. As service providers and specialists, it's our job to stay ahead of these shifts, ensuring that we're prepared for more sustainable offshore operations and actively contribute to them.

At SA Operations, we continue supporting clients with highly skilled offshore personnel ready for this evolving energy landscape. Whether mobilizing a crew for a trenching operation or setting up infrastructure for offshore telecommunications, projects like Wenchang 9-7 remind us all that technical excellence and environmental stewardship can—and should—go hand in hand.

Stay tuned for more industry updates as global offshore activity grows and evolves. The future of offshore energy is more profound and complex—greener and more interconnected than ever.
