Recently, An MOU focusing on the mutual supply, production and logistics of sustainable ammonia and other hydrogen derivatives was signed by Uniper and SKW Piesteritz. In the "medium to long term," SKW Piesteritz will provide Uniper with green or blue ammonia, and the two businesses will work together on imports.
According to Uniper, the agreement also covers the essential logistics for distribution, the development of production capabilities, and the conversion of ammonia into hydrogen. Among other things, it requires SKW Piesteritz to provide Uniper with sustainably produced ammonia. It is also anticipated that the two businesses would work together on imports.
Green ammonia imports will be made simpler for SKW Piesteritz by using Uniper's Wilhelmshaven import terminal, while Uniper will get capacity from SKW Piesteritz via its parent firm AGROFERT at other European ports.
"In partnership with SKW Piesteritz, we guarantee that we can acquire and supply adequate amounts of sustainable ammonia and hydrogen derivatives for our clients," stated Carsten Poppinga, CCO of Uniper. Future cleaner supply needs to be varied, adaptable, and sustainable; this agreement puts us far closer to that objective.
"In addition to our technology development projects for our production facilities, the cooperation with Uniper is another component of our strategy to defossilise our products in the long term," said Petr Cingr, CEO of SKW Piesteritz. We now assist our clients in lowering their carbon impact sustainably. We will optimise this in the future. Here, green ammonia will also be crucial in addition to blue ammonia.
This partnership benefits both companies since Uniper helps SKW Piesteritz defossilise its goods and has access to the knowledge of Germany's biggest ammonia producer in the production, distribution, and storage domains.
Through this partnership, Uniper's strength in the global procurement of low-carbon and carbon-neutral ammonia—which also includes converting the Wilhelmshaven site into an energy hub and landing terminal—will be combined with SKW Piesteritz's knowledge of sustainable ammonia production, logistics for distribution, and landing capacities in Europe.
By 2040, Uniper wants to be carbon neutral in its entirety, and by 2030, it wants more than 80% of its installed electricity-producing capacity to come from zero sources. The corporation stated that to do this, it is investing in dispatchable, flexible power producing units and modernising its power plants and facilities.
