Terna is experimenting with underwater infrastructure with the IoUT

By collaborating with Rome-based Wsense, a top deep-tech company specializing in underwater monitoring and communication systems, Terna is expanding its innovative reach by testing Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) technology. The IoUT technology was examined in the Piombino Channel, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

This underwater network was utilised to collect data in real time, continuously, over an extended period, to monitor several different marine ecosystem indicators, including temperature, turbidity, chlorophyll, underwater noise, and current measurements.

According to the company, 'It demonstrates Terna's dedication to using the most cutting-edge technology to enable even more sustainable and efficient administration of electrical infrastructures, especially in undersea settings.'

Director of Innovation & Market Solutions at Terna, Massimiliano Garri, stated: "We've been using IoT sensors to monitor the status of the power grid, to improve its reliability and resilience, for many years." To explore the possibilities of an underwater data transmission network that might assess specific elements of the marine ecosystem, we are deploying this technology underwater for the first time in collaboration with Wsense.

Through advanced monitoring and the real-time communication of indicative submarine parameters, the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) promises a more intelligent and sustainable management of submarine connections, allowing for the analysis of the human impact on the sea.
