The PosHYdon pilot project has achieved a world-first by successfully producing green hydrogen on an operational offshore platform in the Dutch North Sea. Located on the Q13a-A platform, approximately 13 kilometers off the coast of Scheveningen and operated by Eni Energy Netherlands, the project integrates offshore wind power, hydrogen production, and natural gas operations on a single platform.
Powered entirely by offshore wind, the system converts seawater into demineralized water before producing hydrogen through electrolysis. The pilot aims to evaluate how offshore hydrogen production performs in real-world marine conditions, including the efficiency of electrolyzers under fluctuating wind power, operational reliability, maintenance requirements, and overall project economics. Initial testing focuses on stable hydrogen production before progressing to dynamic operation based on varying offshore wind output. Results from the pilot will help shape the future of offshore hydrogen developments.
The project demonstrates how existing offshore oil and gas infrastructure can be repurposed to support the clean energy transition, offering a practical pathway to decarbonize offshore operations while maximizing the value of existing assets.
