MARINUS LINK IN: PRYSMIAN ANNOUNCES A €600 MILLION CONTRACT

MARINUS LINK IN: PRYSMIAN ANNOUNCES A €600 MILLION CONTRACT

An approximately €600 million deal for the construction of a new electricity interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria, Australia, has been concluded by Prysmian and Marinus Link Pty Ltd. It is anticipated that a notice to proceed will be issued by August 2025, after which the activities will begin.

Prysmian will design, test, provide, and construct a 750-MW high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system as part of the project's initial phase, according to the deal with Marinus Link Pty Ltd. The 345 km (214 mi) link will include 90 km underground in Gippsland, Victoria, and 255 km underwater across Bass Strait.

It is projected that Australia will save up to 70 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2050, meeting its emissions reduction objectives through this link.

"Marinus Link will allow Tasmania to store and reserve its hydropower while importing excess solar and wind energy from other states." The national grid may thus be fed by clean hydropower at times of greatest demand, serving as a sizable national battery, lamented Caroline Wykamp, CEO of Marinus Link.

"This project strengthens our global leadership as well as our position in Oceania's fast-growing renewables market," stated Hakan Ozmen, EVP Transmission at Prysmian. We are pleased to assist Australia in its endeavor to provide consumers with affordable, dependable, and environmentally friendly energy by combining the advantages of renewable resources.

While terrestrial cables will be made in Delft, The Netherlands, or Gron, France, submarine cables will be produced in Prysmian's center of expertise in Arco Felice, Italy. The Leonardo da Vinci, Prysmian's record-breaking cable-laying vessel, will be used for installation operations.

This deal comes after a capacity reserve agreement was first announced in September 2023.
