Newlight, a maritime energy technology company, has successfully completed the first long-range commercial voyage of its hydrogen-hybrid energy system aboard a 199-metre, 57,038-DWT Lomar Shipping bulk carrier.
The system was tested during an 8,500-nautical-mile (15,700 km) voyage from Singapore to Ghana, demonstrating significant reductions in fuel consumption and emissions while using the vessel's existing diesel engines.
The project demonstrates a practical approach to maritime decarbonisation: improving the efficiency of the existing global fleet rather than waiting for an entirely new generation of vessels and fuel infrastructure.
This is particularly significant because shipping remains heavily dependent on conventional fuels, while operators face increasing pressure from fuel costs, carbon regulations and emissions targets.
The retrofit model could therefore provide shipowners with a relatively fast pathway to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while continuing to use their existing vessels.

Looking Ahead
Maritime decarbonisation doesn't always require replacing the vessel—it can start by making the vessel we already have more efficient.
Newlight's 8,500-nautical-mile trial demonstrates the potential of hydrogen-assisted propulsion and AI-driven combustion optimisation to reduce fuel use and emissions while keeping existing diesel infrastructure operational.
For the maritime industry, the move toward hydrogen-hybrid systems could create a growing demand for engineering, retrofit, commissioning, HSE and specialist technical expertise across the vessel lifecycle.
