Baggerbedrijf de Boer – Dutch Dredging has taken delivery of the new 2,300 m³ trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Magdalena at a ceremony in Haiphong, Vietnam. The vessel was built by Nam Trieu Shipbuilding, a division of Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, and designed by Royal IHC.
The delivery of Magdalena highlights the continued investment in modern dredging fleets as contractors seek vessels that can deliver efficient operations while meeting increasingly stringent environmental requirements.
With a 2,300 m³ hopper and nearly 80 metres in length, the vessel strengthens Dutch Dredging's capabilities for maintenance and capital dredging projects, while its environmental compliance demonstrates how new-generation dredgers are being designed with emissions standards in mind.
Relevance to SA
The development is relevant to SA's survey, engineering and marine operations capabilities.
Modern dredging projects require more than the dredger itself. They depend on accurate hydrographic and bathymetric surveys, positioning, seabed assessment, dredging monitoring, marine coordination and specialist technical personnel.
