Disagreements Delay €30 Billion Morocco–Germany Subsea Power Link

Disagreements Delay €30 Billion Morocco–Germany Subsea Power Link

Plans for a €30 billion subsea electricity interconnector between Morocco and Germany have been delayed due to disagreements between the project developers. The ambitious project aims to transport renewable electricity generated in Morocco—including solar and wind power—to Germany via a high-voltage subsea cable system.

The interconnector is designed to strengthen Europe's energy security, support decarbonization efforts, and improve cross-border electricity transmission by linking North Africa's renewable energy resources with European demand. However, differences over project structure and commercial arrangements have slowed progress, delaying advancement of one of the region's most significant energy infrastructure initiatives.

Despite the setback, the project highlights the growing importance of subsea power transmission as countries seek to integrate renewable energy into national grids and diversify their energy supply through international interconnections.

Relevance to SA

The Morocco–Germany interconnector demonstrates the complexity of delivering international subsea energy infrastructure—an area where SA provides valuable offshore support.

Subsea Cable and Marine Operations Support

SA provides experienced specialists for offshore power transmission and cable installation projects, including:

  • Submarine Cable Installation Engineers
  • Project Engineers
  • Marine Operations Specialists
  • Offshore Construction Engineers
  • Installation and Commissioning Engineers
  • T&T Client Representatives
  • T&T NPA Electrical Authorized Persons
  • HV Jointers (Offshore)
  • HV Splicing Technicians
  • FO Jointers (UJ/UQJ)

These professionals support the installation and commissioning of HVDC export cables, offshore substations, interconnectors, and other subsea energy infrastructure.

Looking Ahead

Although the Morocco–Germany subsea power link has encountered delays, it reflects the growing global demand for large-scale interconnectors that can strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition to renewable power. As these projects move forward, integrated engineering, offshore survey capabilities, specialized installation expertise, and experienced technical personnel will remain essential—areas where SA is well positioned to support clients throughout the project lifecycle.
