Balmoral Comtec awarded by Ørsted for Hornsea 3 wind farm development

Ørsted has given a contract to Aberdeen-based Balmoral Comtec, a Balmoral Group company, to deliver 400 cable protection systems (CPS) for the Hornsea 3 wind farm development.

The scope of work entails offering 400 cable protection devices, handling and installation training for the picked maritime contractor, and design engineering, all of which will be done at Balmoral Comtec's Aberdeen location.

Luke Bridgman, the director of Orsted's Hornsea 3 project, stated: "Hornsea 3 is a nationally important renewable energy project, providing clean, affordable energy at scale." Our staff, contractors, and suppliers have a wealth of knowledge and experience that we must utilise to effectively complete an offshore windfarm of this size. As we go through the following phases of development, we are excited to collaborate with Balmoral Comtec.

The Hornsea 3 project is located in the southern North Sea of the United Kingdom, 120 km off the coast of Norfolk.

"We're excited to be involved in bringing Hornsea 3 online and safeguarding it for the duration of its operating life. This project will be essential to the UK's energy transition. To preserve energy security in the UK and the environment, boosting the share of renewable energy in our energy mix is more crucial than ever", according to Fraser Milne, Director of Engineering and Projects at Balmoral Comtec.

Offshore wind developers may face continuous difficulties in controlling the risks of over-bending, abrasion, and fatigue of undersea cables, according to Balmoral Comtec. Validated materials are used in the company's unique method, which mechanically latches together to eliminate the need for PU bonding and improve operating performance and fatigue life.

The final investment decision for the GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm was taken by Ørsted in December of last year. Aiming to be operational by 2027, Hornsea 3 is owned and operated by Ørsted. With a total capacity of more than 5 GW when Hornsea 1, 2, and 3 fully operationnal, it will rank among the biggest offshore wind zones in the world.
